Looking to explore more of the new HTML5 canvas element I’ve started working on a side scrolling space shooter. So far I’ve got the background scrolling and a player ship showing up that can move and shoot.

I plan on adding enemies to shoot at obviously, multiple levels, boss fights, ship upgrades and eventually some mutli-player. I also need to name it, still working on that.

Lately I’ve been interested in branching out from back-end development and doing some browser based 2d stuff. This lead me to the latest HTML5 tech and the canvas element so after running through some docs and getting up to date busted out a fun little vertical scrolling jumping game. The Global Game Jam (GGJ) is a world wide gathering of student game developers and professionals alike. The participants form groups and have 48 hours to develop a playable game from initial concept to playable. Of course with only 48 hours that means that there is very little sleep involved and basically just pure crunch. Unfortunately not all games make it to playable but luckily the team I came to be on was solid.

Every time I take on a personal project I always find myself doing countless hours of research before I make any decisions on which direction to take at certain design points. This project was not an exception to this and I have learned a few new things doing even the most basic work.
